Arthur’s Articles

Hello! My name is Arthur Vartanyan.

Read my first article about my decision to leave Ukraine and study in Canada here. Today we continue Arthur’s story about Bodwell Student Life.

Well, what do you do after you’ve already chosen the school where you are going to study and you’ve finished taking some English courses? Of course, you go to the airport and start your new life. So easy …yeah.

Today I am going to tell you how I made my first steps towards the “adult life”.

From my childhood, because of movies and stories, I think of the airport as the place where people go if they want to change something in their life. They may even want to change their life completely, to start from the new page. They go to the airport and buy a ticket to anywhere… Just anywhere!

Leaving the Airport in Ukraine.

My life has brought me to the airport, and you know for what? Yes, to change my life totally. When my father and I decided to go to Canada, I was a bit nervous. I had different thoughts from “what am I going to eat?” to “have I made a right choice?” Yeah, my brain was going to explode. Every day I thought about my future life. My English teacher from my previous school in Ukraine shared some preconceptions with me, and I want to share them with you: “In Canada people don’t care about each other. They are not good in Math. Yeah, they are terrible in Math!” If you can find evidence for these opinions, please write a comment below because she was saying it to me for a month. Every day. Anyway, my heart felt like it was braking in two. Every day I was feeling like a car crashed into me but after a while, I realized that it was the right choice and I should not think negative thoughts. When the time came, my parents and I went to the airport.

Of course, before I went to the airport to start a new life, I spent one week with everybody with whom I wanted to be: my friends, my parents, my aunts and uncles. When I came to the airport, my feelings and thoughts were mixed. I was happy and sad at the same time. I had so many emotions inside that I cannot describe by using words, but outside I probably was looking like a heartless stone. I attach a picture for you for better understanding.

The picture above is from a performance at the school. I believe my face was like this when I was leaving the airport.

Okay, let’s continue… I could not say anything to my parents; even when they were asking me. I was in silence, but trust me, I had a lot of to say.

How was the last minute with my parents? Probably most people cry in these moments or say how much they love them, but not I. I still could not speak for some reason. My face was like, “Where am I? What is happening?” You probably know a “Poker face” picture, if not just Google it. Well, the last moments between my father and mother, I encapsulated this. My mother was saying something to me, but for some reason I could not understand her. After she finished, my father said something to me and I believe they were waiting for my response. I remember at the end my father said, “He is okay, he is probably just in shock.” I hugged them and went away from them to my new life. That’s how my journey started….
